Time: 55 - 60 minutes
Topic: The impact of technology use in the U.S.
Skills in Focus:
- Grammar/Speaking: Identify appropriate application of the verb forms "use to" vs. "used to"
- Listening Comprehension/Discussion of two product commercials at normal speaking speed
- Writing to express past habitual markers
- Sociolinguistic/Socio-cultural comparisons of changes in technology use
Goals:
- Distinguish when to use "use to" vs. "used to" correctly
- Express comparative differences between previous and current behavioral habits
- Answer comprehension questions after watching two, short videos
Objectives:
By the end of the lesson students will be able to:
- Use context clues to match vocabulary words with sample sentences.
- Compare and describe how technology has changed how we communicate, prepare and store food, and play in the U.S.
- Write a short paragraph about the class topic using correct verb forms of “use to” and “used to”
Materials:
- Projector with computer connection
- PPT slides (separate file) (Appendix A)
- Conversation/grammar cards for practice (Appendix B)
Class Description
Warm-up (5 minutes)
Participation Framework: Whole Class

- Teacher (T) asks how everyone is doing? anything new? any questions about last class?
- T starts PowerPoint (PP) (Appendix A), and presents learning objectives and topic for the day—Technology use in the U.S.
Listening/Speaking Activity (15 minutes)
Participation Framework: Individual/Whole class
Objective: #2
- Ss are asked to note any unfamiliar vocabulary words while watching two short commercial video ads for high-tech products.
- Following each commercial, Ss are asked for any unfamiliar vocabulary noted. T writes them on the board and discusses.
- Ss are then asked the video comprehension questions included in the PP.
- This procedure is repeated for each of the two commercial video ads.
Grammar/Speaking (10 minutes)
Participation Framework: Pairs
Objective: #1
- T shows the grammar warm-up slides, reads the two sentences containing “use to” and “used to,” and asks students (Ss) if they can hear the difference.
- T explains the grammatical difference between “use to” and “used to”.
- T pairs Ss, and gives each paired group two sets of grammar/conversation cards (Appendix B). One set contains all of the question cards. The other set contains one card each of "use to" and "used to" (two cards total for the second set).
- T gives directions for using the grammar/conversation cards, and demonstrates how to use them.
- While Ss are practicing application of "used to" and "use to" in pairs, T observes and notes any challenges Ss are having, correcting any mistakes.
Speaking/Writing Exercise (20-25 minutes)
Participation Framework: Pairs/Whole class
Objective: #3
- T shows slides of technology changes.
- In pairs, Ss are asked to make a pros/cons list for each of the slide's technology changes discussed, e.g., kitchen appliances, communication devices, games.
- Ss share lists in class discussion.
- T reads aloud the PP slides with the writing exercise directions and sentence prompts.
- Ss are asked to use the sentence prompts, and write continuously for 5-7 minutes.
- As a homework assignment, Ss are asked to edit and make corrections to their writing exercise. Homework is to be turned in the next class for assessment and corrective feedback.
Wrap-up (5 minutes)

T asks Ss to share what they learned in the class period, and if there are any questions/comments about any of the materials covered.
